Happy Monday! We’ve been busy, busy trying to get our home ready to put on the market. That was my opportunity to do our bedroom makeover! Finally! I’ve been trying to talk my husband into painting for the last year! After I painted the walls, I decided to brave the idea of painting our solid curtains to give them a bold stripe! I thought this was easy right? Well it is if you are patient (I apparently am not), if you use the right paint roller (I finally figured out 1 day into the project), and paint onto light colored fabric (I just happened to have dark gray curtain panels I was working with). Definitely iron your curtains before doing anything.

Here is what you need:

Boring Curtain panels

Painters tape (wider the better)

Foam roller (at least 6″)

Any paint you have on hand (I used my extra trim paint)

Paint tray to roll your paint

Large flat working surface (inside is better, but I worked outside in our driveway)

Here are the steps to painting striped curtains…

Measure your panels. My panels were 84″ long. Decide how thick you want your stripes and mark them with a pen on your curtain on each edge of the panels. When you tape, just follow straight across to the mark you made on the opposite side. My panels have a bit of a woven line I could follow, but a yardstick would be helpful too, to get a straight taped line. I made 12 equal stripes 7″ thick. Make sure you tape giving more room in the area you will paint. I decided I liked the look of a gray stripe at the top of the curtain, so I started painting the 2nd stripe down. If you are painting outside as I did, make sure you put something to weight your panels down so they don’t blow away! That’s why you see my random pots or plants holding mine down:)

Whatever you do, don’t use a foam roller this small or get impatient like I did and use a roller you’d typically use on your walls. They both take way too long to get paint on after it just soaks in. Use a 6″ foam roller!:) (not pictured…I was leaving to go buy one!) I promise it will be your best friend! The foam helps to roll the paint on but not too thick. It gives you great crisp lines when you pull the tape up.

After you’ve taped, start the fun part! Painting:) If I had an old sheet, I would have put under each curtain panel, but all I had was scrap cardboard that I slid under each edge I was painting to, so I didn’t paint all over the driveway:) It didn’t bleed through, but they were pretty thick panels with a good blackout lining behind them. This photo below is after 4 coats of paint! Ahhh! It just kept soaking into this dark fabric, but I kept on going until I couldn’t see any gray through the white paint…

…And 10 total coats of paint later!

Don’t pull up the tape too soon, wait to make sure the paint dries and hasn’t soaked in needing another layer of paint. Pull the tape up carefully, and let them dry completely for a couple of hours before hanging them up.

I found that a few clothes pins helped hold where I wanted pleats folded. I left them on for about an hour..

Final touch to our bedroom makeover…

Hello all of you DIY-ers and bird lovers like myself!

In my spare time, I love trying DIY projects. (And whatever I can get my husband to help me build) I have always wanted a birdhouse that I could see into when there was a nest built without disturbing the baby birds! Here is the finished product! See below for step by step…

I found my inspiration from this photo online.

This one is from http://www.wildbirdmart.com/bh100.html if you aren’t much of a DIY-er…

You can purchase theirs online for $34.99.

We had some scrap wood laying around to use. I decided on the size based on how big our window was. Going off the back opening size, 5″ x 7″ (from the bottom slope of roof) 5″ x 10″ (from top slope of roof) I let my husband work the miter saw:) Basically you only want 3 sides and a roof, so you can see the inside from your window of course!

Use a “spade bit” attachment on your drill for the birdie hole:) We chose 1-1/2″ bit for most birds.

Use a nail gun for a quick construction.. I also used a little wood glue to hold before we nailed.

I’ve been waiting for my chance to use the ever so popular chevron pattern on something! So I found a great free printable Chevron pattern here:

http://www.billiemonster.com/blog/article/chevron-pattern-printable-template

I chose the “small, thick” size chevron to cut out. I printed it out on paper, and then cut out onto cardboard for a more sturdy stencil. I painted the overall house with white deck paint I had on hand and gray deck paint for the chevron pattern.

I just blotted the paint on with a small sponge brush. It doesn’t have to be perfect, and you can go back to add another coat of paint…but I was too excited to put it up, so I just left it a little sloppy:)

I love turquoise, so I added “Hey little birdie” with some acrylic paint using a small paintbrush.

Screw in suction cups to hold in place on your window…You can order a pack of 2 or 4 suction cups off Amazon.

I wanted a window that I could peek into the birdhouse, but able to keep the blinds mostly closed so I don’t scare the birds off…that just so happened to be the highest window on our house:)

Now close your blinds and hope a little birdie nests:)

Here IT is! My very first blog! I sometimes (a lot of times) over think things and this is one of them, as I have put the weight of the world on what to write for my new blog. I always try to be such a perfectionist, but I am officially taking the pressure off this first entry and simply introducing myself and my home to you…

My husband and I are about to celebrate our 1st wedding anniversary on September 26th! Still newlyweds! :) When Josh and I got married, I moved into what I called his “bachelor pad”. Let’s just say, the entire year we dated, I mentally decorated “his” house every time I came over! As Josh helped my father move many truck loads of my things, into his house, he couldn’t imagine where we would put everything! But, when I finally got ALL my “stuff” in place, he said, “It feels like our little nest!”

With my blog, I hope to inspire you with creativity & show you the many things that inspire me. Enjoy & Welcome, friends! :)

Welcome to OUR Nest!

Just haven’t gotten around to a color on the walls in our bedroom, but working with a gray & yellow scheme…
